It appears that wherever you go you’re hearing the words “Twitter” and Tweet and maybe wondering what on earth is going on. It certainly seems to be taking off now, and more and more people are connecting onto Twitter, albeit some have not quite mastered the art of twittering.

We have just recently done a couple of presentations for local businesses in Somerset on marketing and the use of social networking sites in your marketing strategy, and my theory is right. There is a myth that it is a complete waste of time, and people just don’t get it. Presenting about the use of Twitter and how it can add value to your business, the feedback was “well I don’t want to know what so and so has bought at the supermarket?” My reply is simply well you’re following the wrong people. Twitter is not about people’s habits, it’s about sharing information and knowledge and connecting with people. Striking up relationships with new people you might never have connected with without the use of the internet.

Think of it as a party at your house. Invite people in, instead of offering them a drink offer a nugget of information and see what comes back. You never know it might be an even brighter, even more valuable nugget that is returned. What a great way to connect. There are businesses connecting every minute on Twitter and it’s a fantastic opportunity for individuals and small businesses to connect first hand with the big boys, should they so choose. Never before have people and businesses been so easy to access, so lets embrace this opportunity, open our doors and have a party!

Social Media is a phenomenon. I am still a newbie when it comes to Twitter, Facebook, Stumble Upon, Delicious. I’ve been reading several blogs about how to manage your time with all these wonderful interfaces that exist and how to stop them from taking over your life, and I am still working on a solution.

The issue is that I love it, am passionate about it and want to keep on surfing and linking but now my “in-tray” is becoming bigger I am struggling to juggle the time. I also have to take into account the family – husband, teenage children who are great and just get on and do their own thing, but need still need love and support, which I am blessed with, and I just need to focus on my strategy for the social media side, and how to integrate this with work, homelife and catching up with friends.

This is very new and exciting and I’m finding I’m meeting people from all over the world that I would never have otherwise engaged with. I believe in it that much too that I find myself talking to all my customers about it and seem to be converting them by the day, which is great news for them.

I’m sure I’m not alone in this scenario and I am constantly working on a solution which I’m sure will come very soon. It’s just a case of OK, I’m working on this right now, and yes, this is a great link I’d love to share this with my fellow twitterers. These are exciting times, but scary too and the key to all of this is – love it, embrace it and enjoy it and just learn and get on with it, My time will come, and then it will become all worth while.
